Report ON BP Macondo Spill

ABC on report
Forbes on report

It seems the US government has decided to release its report on the BP-Macondo Oil Leak which I have often discussed in this blog. Over time I will try to report on both the released report itself and how it may affect the situation we already have.

Last of a Trio of video posts

Still soldiering on?

Things around me keep me pretty well tuned in and so I await better times for blogging

I am hoping that my blog will turn the corner in terms of technical quality. However, everytime I hit these problems it damages the relationship the blog has with those of you who check in regularly.

Waiting, Weary and Watchful for a Wanton Wetting

I am real tired. I cannoy get any of these links to work from this post. I have had blog problems lately. But if you copy and paste or drag them then here are some flood web sites without much comment:

Red Cross in the Acadiana region:
http://www.acadianaredcross.org

Evacuation shelter and relief programs:
http://www.redcross.org/portal/site

Keep informed about the flood, help friends and neighbors, stay in touch with officials. Protect yourself, be paranoid. Also look at this site: http://gohsep.la.gov

This barely a post but there is more anyway. If you live in the areas of south Louisiana which will flood and you have already secured life, loved ones livestock, valuables and pets then please consider securing or evacuating all hazardous materials you can with your neighbors. To follow the flood see the following link: http://emergency.la.gov

John James Audobon’s 226th Birthday

John James Audobon has had an enormous influence on Louisiana culture and its asthetic sensibilities. The great, hunter painter, collector and naturalist who specialized in birds was also ve y accomplished in depicting both their actual food and behavior in a still scene. He was even more accomplished in showing their environment correctly with almost no exceptions. He made bery careful observations when he found a bird and set those down in a permanent record of real artistic merit. His work, though criticized by some of our own era has provided a vital benchmark for many aspects of conservation and ecology in our time.

For a good summary of his most important stay in Louisiana well presented with art see this product of LSU press:

One of the reasons that my own political opinions favor more radical than conventional change is because I think we will need such change to be effective as regards the environment and our environmenal policy. But we are not starting without any assets. Among the greatest part of the conservationist heritage of the Western Hemisphere is the work of John James Audobon.

A documentary is based on the book above which aired on Louisiana Public Broadcasting and is quite good I think. It gives a glimpse into the life Audobon lived here. http://beta.lpb.org/index.php/site/programs/a_summer_of_birds/

To see some of theart he did as provided by the society which acts in and under his name you can check out this website: http://web4.audubon.org/bird/BoA/BOA_index.html

The actual first edition prinitngs of his great works in book form are among the great treasures of humanity and deserve to be. Pricey as such thing are they are probably undervalued. However, better or worse prints of his works adorn walls in Louisiana and elsewhere with frequency and form well beloved connections with the outside world.

Bobbie L. Leblanc Tinker, Mrs. Joseph Tinker Killed in Automobile Accident

The daughter of General Leblanc and a lifelong friend of my parents who married her high school sweetheart Bobbie Leblanc Tinker was badly injured and largely disabled by a crippling physical condition for years. She and her husband were deeply rooted with families from Vermilion Parish in Louisiana but when his career took them to Texas they had been very active in the Charismatic Renewal in Dallas for year but after Joseph Tinker retired had come home and even built a new home. They were a notably close couple. She was killed in a tragic road accident and I hope to go to the wake and possibly the funeral and remember her in a future blog post. I do not know where the arrangements are being handled at this point.

Louisiana State University loses to Arkansas

LSU  lost the contest for the golden boot trophy yesterday which is held by the most recent winner of the University of Arkansas and Louisiana State University football game. They lost the game in fifth and to a twelfth ranked opponent and will surely fall out of the top ten finish in the BCS rankings this season. They almost surely fell out of the BCS bowls and most of all the Nokia Sugar Bowl.

Ouch!

Nonetheless, I hope to see them in a pretty good bowl. Congratulations LSU on many more wins than losses and the memorable victory over Nick Saban’s Alabama in a difficult year.

GO Saints! How about some professional glory? We could have seconds, mmm it tasted good last year.

Early Voting in Louisiana Opens Today & goes to the 26th except Sunday

Jay Dardenne and Caroline Fayard compete for the Lieutenant Governor’s post for the remainder of the term vacated by Mitch Landrieu since he became mayor of New Orleans.

Incumbent David Vitter and Congressman Charlie Melancon lead a pack of contenders for the US Senate.

There are constitutional amendments related to public nuisance property, disabled veterans privileges, the waiver of rights to a jury trial, the exemption from taxes for homesteads damaged by disasters, the effective date for pay raises in public office and the share of severance tax revenues that go to each parish.  I recommend one take time to know these proposed amendments.

These are the only statewide issues although others are on many other precinct ballots. I voted early today.

Running Off to the November Elections

Well we have a party-led primary to give us a Libertarian candidate as well as Congressman Charlie Melancon as our Democratic US Senate candidate and Davis Vitter as our incumbent Republican US Senate candidate. We have passed two constitutional ammendments which have made changes to the Louisiana constitution. We have had our open primary in which Sammy Kershaw who shares with me roots in Vermilion Parish was squeezed out as close third in a race which had almost half a dozen candidates finishing well below him. That leaves the runoff election to Republican “Jay” Dardenne our current Secretary of State and Caroline Fayard a Democrat and Louisiana lawyer endorsed by Bill Clinton personally.

In addition to all of this we have lots of races which do not involve the entire state. We now look at the races which the rest of the country is anticipating to see who will control each chamber in Congress as well as our other offices up for election this term.
